To say that this past week was a difficult week for the Schramm household would be putting it lightly. Tyler started getting sick 2 weeks ago tomorrow with a cough and then that night was up most of the night wheezing and just not breathing well which meant, Mommy didn't sleep well at all either. Thursday morning, he just so happened to have an appointment with his pediatrician for his well check. He weighed 18lb 9oz and was just shy of 30 inches long which makes him one skinny, tall little boy! He was in the 25th percentile for weight and 90th for height. He had to get 2 shots and get poked to check his hemoglobin. The doctor also confirmed that he was indeed wheezing and diagnosed him with
bronchiolitis and tested him for
RSV. You can click on the two things there and read up on them in you like. Friday afternoon, I got the call that confirmed that it was indeed RSV. When I found out I was pregnant with Tyler, I was so excited that I wouldn't have a winter baby because RSV is something that I see way too much at work and I have seen such horrible cases of it. I didn't want my kids to ever get it. With Tyler's symptoms though, I wasn't surprised and knew that the best thing I could do for him was just let him rest and try to get as much of the drainage out as possible to prevent him from getting worse. Well, Saturday night, I was giving him a bath and couldn't help but notice that he was retracting (using other muscles to breath) and breathing over 80 times a minute. (Normal would be more like in the 20's.) So, I called one of the doctor's in the ER that I work with and told her his symptoms to which she told me that it sounded like he needed to be seen. So, down to the ER I went. I don't like seeing my coworkers unless I am getting paid for it!! No offense to them, but I wasn't exactly thrilled with having to go in. They suctioned him out real good, gave him a breathing treatment, diagnosed him with an ear infection, and sent us on our merry way. The treatment helped him A LOT and we both went home and slept for a good solid 4 hours, better than we had gotten the previous 3 days. Sunday, I stayed home from church with him mainly because I didn't want to expose other babies and kids to the RSV and other than just not eating as much as normal, he had a pretty good day. He was still a little wheezy and struggling a bit to breath, but not near as bad as the night before. Well, at 2am Monday morning, Tyler woke up and just would not go back to sleep and he was retracting and wheezing really bad again with his respiratory rate being in the 60's to 70's so back to the ER we went. The same doctor that had seen him the night before was there again and she thought that he was definitely worse and even after a treatment was not well enough to go home. His oxygen saturation was also too low and required him to be put on oxygen. Normal is anywhere above 93-100% and he was in the 80's. I have seen countless babies and children on oxygen and hooked up to monitors, but nothing ever could have prepared me for having to see it on my own child. I am thankful that Tyler never needed blood drawn or an IV because that would have just been too much for this momma! We spent two days admitted and were discharged a week ago now. Tyler is almost back to 100% and Tim and I could not be more happy about that. We are on our last day of antibiotics for his ear infection, thank goodness! Tyler hates it and usually requires both of us to give it to him. He is eating normally and actually eating much more than he used to. Must be going through a growth spurt again. :) Actually, he is probably just trying to make up for the pound that he lost while he was sick. Here are some pictures of our stay at the Children's Medical Center.
In the ER :(

Tyler LOVED his "cage" which was definitely a good thing because he wasn't really allowed to leave it. It would have been even harder if he cried the whole time he was in there.

Spending some time cuddling with Daddy before he had to go to work :(

Finally getting some rest!

Playing with "Ollie" the elephant

Feeling better and off oxygen, so we thought we would venture out of our little room for a bit :)

He was mesmerized by the fish tank...this picture is taken through the fishtank which is why it is so blurry.

And, he's had enough...back to our room we go. :)

It was only a few hours after this we were sent home where everyone got a GREAT nights sleep and began our road to recovery. Thanks to all of you who prayed for us while we were in the hospital!
